[30] Indigenous Governance Traditions for Sustainable Rural Entrepreneurship

Dr. Nimish Mishra, Dr. Praveen Kumar Rai & Dr. Anurag Tiwari

Drawing on a synthesis of contemporary scholarship spanning Africa, Asia, and America, this paper develops a conceptual framework
linking indigenous governance structures to entrepreneurial outcomes such as resource conservation, social cohesion, and inclusive
economic growth. The analysis identifies recurring institutional features—consensus-based leadership, customary resource tenure,
intergenerational knowledge transmission, and hybrid governance arrangements—that enable rural enterprises to remain resilient while respecting cultural values. The paper also surveys empirical cases, including tribal knowledge–based enterprises, community-based natural resource management systems, and hybrid panchayat models in India, to illustrate how these traditions translate into practice. It concludes by identifying persistent challenges, including inadequate documentation, weak policy recognition, and tensions between  customary and formal institutions, and proposes a research and policy agenda for integrating indigenous governance into sustainable rural entrepreneurship strategies.
