Art and regimes share a very interesting history. Art had flourished under the patronage of rulers from time immemorial but after the dawn of nineteenth century art has become largely antiestablishment. This is more so true in a globalized world besieged with religious intolerance, rampant discrimination, power struggles, wars, poverty and injustice. Art, whether its canvas painting, plays, poems, novels or cinema have taken up the onus of exposing the lacunas of the society they inhabit. Increasingly artists are forced to work in a hostile environment. Repeatedly their freedom of expression is curtailed. Many artists have taken refuge in places congenial for their art to flourish. Many have chosen to work in exile. Bertolt Brecht, Salman Rushdie. Tasleema Nasreen, M.F. Hussain are a few artists who can be mentioned in this category.
